The United States Secret Service
The United States Secret Service (USSS) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security. It is responsible for protecting the president, vice president, and their families, as well as the White House and the vice president's residence. The Secret Service also provides protection to visiting foreign heads of state and former presidents.
A History of Protection
The Secret Service was established in 1865 to combat counterfeiting. In 1901, the agency was given the responsibility of protecting the president after the assassination of William McKinley. Over the years, the Secret Service has expanded its mission to include protecting other high-profile individuals and safeguarding the nation's financial system.
A Global Force
Today, the Secret Service has more than 150 offices throughout the United States and abroad. The agency also plays a critical role in protecting US and visiting world leaders, and safeguarding US elections through protection of candidates and nominees.
