Manchester City Thrash FC Copenhagen 6-2 in Champions League Rout
Aguero and Haaland Star as City Cruise to Victory
Manchester City continued their impressive start to the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League season with a dominant 6-2 aggregate victory over FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night. The English champions were in control from the outset, and goals from Manuel Akanji, Julian Alvarez, and Erling Haaland put them in a commanding position at half-time. Copenhagen briefly rallied in the second half, but goals from Sergio Gomez, Riyad Mahrez, and Haaland sealed the win for City. The result leaves Copenhagen bottom of Group G, while City go top with two wins from two matches.
City Dominant from the Start
City were the dominant force from the off, and they took the lead in the 5th minute when Akanji headed home from a corner. Alvarez made it 2-0 just four minutes later, finishing coolly after being played through by Haaland. Copenhagen had a few chances to get back into the game, but they were unable to find a way past City's resolute defense. Haaland then put the game beyond doubt in the 45th minute, scoring a stunning goal from outside the box.
Copenhagen Rally in Second Half
Copenhagen showed more spirit in the second half, and they pulled a goal back through Mohamed Elyounoussi in the 29th minute. However, City were always in control, and they restored their three-goal lead just six minutes later through Riyad Mahrez. Cornelius pulled another goal back for Copenhagen in the 84th minute, but it was too little, too late. Haaland then sealed the win for City in the 90th minute, scoring his second goal of the night.
City Top of Group G
The win leaves City top of Group G with two wins from two matches. Copenhagen are bottom of the group with no points from their opening two games. City will now face Borussia Dortmund in their next Champions League match on October 11th, while Copenhagen will travel to Sevilla.
